Limön is an idyllic summer island in the Gävle archipelago, visited as an excursion destination as early as the 19th century. Here, you can swim, fish, barbecue at picnic areas, hike the nature trail, and see both the old and new lighthouse.
The old fishing village on Limön comes to life when summer visitors arrive. In the harbour, you’ll find traditional boathouses and wooden piers. There are three bathing spots on the island: Kalkudden, Scoutviken and Tärnviken.
The name Limön derives from the Old Norse and English word "lime," meaning limestone. Thanks to the lime-rich soil and favourable climate, several plant species on the island are unique, and the birdlife is abundant. The landscape is shaped by the calcareous ground, with a rich variety of flora – some species even reach their northernmost habitat here. A nature trail with information signs guides you through the island’s wildlife and natural surroundings.
A summer café is open from Thursday to Sunday during weeks 25 to 31 in 2025. You can also rent Storstugan, Lillstugan or Ladulängan from 28 May to 30 August. The easiest way to reach the island is with the Limö boat.
Here’s how to dock at Limön: follow the range lines and the marked channel. Guest berths are available at the two floating jetties. Depth is limited at the inner jetty. The harbour is sheltered from all winds. Drinking water is available at the café.
Please respect the natural environment. Stay on the paths and leave trees, shrubs and moss untouched. Keep dogs on a leash and avoid disturbing bird nests. Fires are only permitted at designated barbecue areas.

Limön’s seaside bathing area
Limön’s seaside bathing area offers three beautiful swimming spots just outside Gävle: Kalkudden, Tärnviken and Scoutviken. Kalkudden is located near the old fishing village and features a barbecue area and an accessible toilet. Tärnviken has a shallow beach, a wind shelter, and a barbecue area. Scoutviken is situated on the southern side of the island and offers both a barbecue area and a toilet.

Limön’s nature trail
Explore Limön’s nature trail, a 4 km loop with several shortcuts for shorter walks. Enjoy sea views, barbecue areas, wind shelters, and a well-marked path. The trail takes you through forest, coastal nature, beaches, and summer cottage areas. Start at Limö Café for access to drinking water and toilets, and choose to hike towards either Tärnviken or Scoutviken.
